The CEO of Twitter, Elon Muskasserted Thursday that countries should not “cede authority” to the World Health Organization (WHO), in comments quickly dismissed by the head of the UN health agency.
“Countries should not cede authority to the WHO“, wrote Muskwhose Twitter account has more than 132 million followers, in response to a video by right-wing Australian Senator Malcolm Roberts criticizing the organization.
“Countries are not ceding sovereignty to the @WHO”CEO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted in response. “The deal on pandemics will not change that. The agreement will help countries to better protect themselves against pandemics,” he added.
Since COVID-19 emerged more than three years ago, the World Health Organization has complained of a “infodemic” of misinformation around the pandemic.
Sometimes the agency UN it has been the direct target of such attacks, and some commentators accuse it of trying to wrest health policy away from governments, especially since international negotiations began between member states on a new pandemic treaty to prevent and deal with future outbreaks.
