The Chilean health authorities announced that the country will open its land borders as of December 1. However, the mayor of Arica believes that the term should be longer.
The mayor of the city of Arica, Gerardo Espíndola, stated that It should grant a period of 45 days to open its border with Peru, until January 2022.
“In Santiago de Chile, the area that borders Argentina, which is the Los Libertadores pass, will only open in January. So why don’t we take this with the height it deserves so that in 45 days or less we will have time to plan with Peru and in Arica “he explained to Radio Exitosa.
According to the authorities, Chile can be entered by land through three points: Chacalluta and Colchane (to the north), which border Peru and Bolivia, respectively, and Pino Hachado, in the region of La Araucanía (center-south) , an emblematic crossroads with Argentina.
They are added to the four already enabled airports located in Santiago and in the towns of Iquique and Antofagasta (to the north) and Punta Arenas (in the extreme south).
All Chilean and foreign residents, non-resident travelers with vaccines validated by the Ministry of Health or children under 6 years of age may enter through any of these seven points.
Mayor Espíndola also criticizes that the Peruvian government has not said what are the requirements that citizens who want to cross the border from Chile to Peru must meet.
“That issue is clear to enter Chile. What is not clear is that Peru will demand to enter its country. In the case of Chile, there are a series of requirements such as buying insurance to deal with covid-19 cases. There must be a vaccination homologation, PCR test and other requirements ”, express.
Chile closed the borders in April, when it was going through a second wave of the pandemic that put the health system on the ropes and reopened them for all kinds of people, residents or not, last October, but only by air, according to EFE.
