The miske from Ecuador achieves its own denomination of origin

Miske, a traditional alcoholic drink from Ecuador Made through the distillation of agave sap, it obtained its own designation of origin on Tuesday with a view to protecting its method of production and reaching international markets.

The presentation of the denomination of origin was carried out in an act, in Quito, organized by the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries, where a group of producers of this drink was certified, which is to be valued within the Ecuadorian gastronomy.

It is a product relegated in recent times within the gastronomic culture of Ecuador and that still keeps a set of knowledge and traditions around the penco, as the agave plant is called in the Ecuadorian Andes, the same as in Mexico is used to make tequila.

The declaration of denomination of origin will allow miske to be positioned as a product originating from the inter-Andean corridor, whose quality, reputation and other characteristics are exclusively due to the geographical environment in which it is produced, including natural and human factors.

The seal was established after three years of accompaniment and advice to the National Association of Productive Chains of Penco and Cabuya of Ecuador (Anagavec), by the Monitoring Commission of the Inter-institutional System for the Promotion and Protection of Denominations of Origin and Geographical Indications of Ecuador.

Miske thus became the seventh appellation of origin in Ecuador, joining the hat from Montecristi, the coffee of origin from Loja, Cacao Arriba, the peanut from Trasnkutukú, the Amazon pitahaya from Palora and the coffee from the Galapagos.

The last four have achieved the recognition of protection of the designation of origin for the European market, something that the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries will also seek for the miske.

In the same act, a practical guide was also presented that allows interested parties to know the steps that must be followed and the characteristics that the product must have to be certified with the designation of origin.
