Chile’s Senate refuses to remove President Piñera in impeachment over Pandora’s papers

The opposition has not reached the required two-thirds (29 votes) to approve the removal of the Chilean president.

The Senate of Chile has refused to remove President Sebastián Piñera, for the alleged irregularities that he would have committed in the sale of a controversial mining project, revealed by the Pandora Papers.

In the vote held yesterday in the Senate, the opposition did not achieve the necessary two-thirds (29 votes of the total of 43 seats) to approve the accusation against the president. Last week the Chamber of Deputies validated the initiation of a process that in practice is a political trial (impeachment) in which the upper house acts as a jury.

The Senate session began with the presentation of three opposition deputies, who made the accusations against the Chilean president known to the senators: failing to the principle of “probity” and “seriously compromising the honor of the Nation”, based on what was revealed for the Pandora Papers.

All this has occurred just five days before Chile will hold presidential elections on November 21 to search for Piñera’s successor, who will end his term in March 2022.

After the result of this impeachment, Piñera will be able to continue in office for the months that remain.
