The future of the John Wick franchise looks uncertain after the director said he and Keanu Reeves will star they are “finished for now”.

Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated next installment in the saga, John Wick: Chapter 4on March 24 filmmaker Chad Stahelski, 54, revealed he and Reeves, 58, wanted to put the franchise to rest after releasing four movies in nine years.

Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter, “In our minds, Keanu and I are done for now. Let’s give John Wick a break. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it gets crazy, we’ll take a minute off.”

He added that when the press tour ends in Japan, he and Reeves will ponder the future of the franchise.

“Keanu and I will make the long drive to Tokyo, sit down at the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and say, ‘What do you think?’ We grab some 20 year old whiskeys and write down some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, we might make a movie,” the director said.

In the first John Wick film, the main character and former assassin lived a peaceful life in retirement, with a cute dog for a companion. When a group of hitmen made the mistake of murdering his beloved dog, contract killer Wick came out of retirement bleeding.

In this new episode, Reeves returns with Ian McShane (Winston), Lance Reddick (Charon) and Laurence Fishburne (Bowery King). Newcomers making their franchise debut in Chapter 4 include international action icon Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Scott Adkins, Natalia Tena, and Clancy Brown.

Additionally, Reeves and McShane have been confirmed to return as John Wick and Winston in the upcoming spin-off Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas. The story follows a young woman who has been raised as a hitman from an early age, who seeks revenge against the hitmen who killed her family. Production started in November, although it is not yet clear when the film will be released.

John Wick: Chapter 4 will be the longest film in franchise history, clocking in at 2 hours and 49 minutes.
