At least five people died and several were injured today after a gas explosion near a popular market in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital, reported to Efe emergency services.
“Four bodies have been recovered, three men and one woman. In addition, a child that we had rescued alive from the scene later died while being transferred to the hospital,” Ibrahim Farinloye, acting coordinator of the National Agency for Emergency Management (NEMA) in the southwest of the country.
As Farinloye explained by telephone, the explosion near the popular market of Ladipo occurred around 08:00 local time (09:00 GMT) in a gas store.
The coordinator added that firefighters have put out the fire and rescue operations are underway, but at the moment the cause of the explosion is unknown.
“Many people were seriously burned in the explosion, and have been taken to hospital,” he told Efe by telephone a merchant in the affected area, Augustine Uche.
Lagos has recently suffered several gas explosions, the most recent last June, when at least five people were killed and 13 injured when a tanker carrying liquefied gas exploded.
Also in March 2020, 23 people died and some 50 houses were destroyed after the explosion at a gas processing plant in Abule Odo, a suburb of the city.
In October 2020, 13 people were killed and several injured in a liquefied gas explosion in Baruwa, another suburb of Lagos. (I)
