German Catholic priests will be able to bless unions of homosexual couples from 2026, as decided this Friday in Frankfurt (south) by a Synodal Path conferencethe dialogue forum created to promote the reform of the institution.
176 of the 202 members of the union, made up of bishops and laymen, have voted in favor of carrying out these ceremonies, while 14 have voted against and 12 have abstained.
The blessings will not be introduced immediately, however, but after a period of three yearswhich will be used to establish, with the participation of the German Bishops’ Conference and other bodies, the exact liturgy of the ceremony, as well as other formal aspects.
As part of the same resolution, entitled ‘Blessings for Loving Couples’the Synodal Path has also approved blessings for heterosexual couples whose members have been married civilly after a divorce.
The regularization of these blessings was one of the central demands of the Synodal Path, a reform forum founded in 2019, which has not shied away from the confrontation with Rome and in which it is advocated, among others, to examine the practice of celibacy and for opening at women the delivery of sermons.
For his part, he Pope Francisco He has shown himself willing to “review” celibacy within the Catholic Church, since it is a “temporary prescription” of the Western Church, he stated in an interview with the Argentine portal Infobae on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his papacy.
The Pope has recognized that “sometimes celibacy can lead to machismo” and has stressed the need to appoint more women to positions of responsibility in the Vatican.
The Vatican declared in 2021 that the blessing of homosexual couples is not allowed according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church and affirmed that this type of union “cannot be recognized objectively as aligned with the revealed plans of God.”
The fifth and for the time being the last meeting of the Synodal Path decision-making union will conclude this Saturday in Frankfurt, after three days that have been awaited with anticipation by both detractors as well as defenders of the reform processwhich started as a result of the child abuse scandals in the German Catholic Church.
