Many countries of the European Union (EU) will take a hundred years to ensure that women are adequately represented in Parliament, unless they take more steps and faster, denounced the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, this Wednesday in Bucharest.
“If the countries that are behind do not introduce corrections, it is estimated that it will take another hundred years to have adequate parliamentary representation of women”Dalli said, according to the Agerpres agency.
The commissioner, who ended a three-day visit to Romania today, said “not to be happy” with the fact that there are only two female ministers in the Romanian government.
In this sense, he added that there is also an unequal representation of women at the European level, although there are countries that have made progress on this issue, while others lag behind, he added.
That inequality, and that women are not represented in Parliaments and Governments “as they should”It’s not good for governance, but it’s not good for democracy in general either, he said.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the European Commission launched a campaign to combat gender stereotypes, as part of the Strategy for Gender Equality.
