Authorities transfer to the US citizens released after kidnapping in Mexico

This morning, the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villareal, indicated that the four kidnapped Americans had been located, two of them dead.

“35 minutes ago it was confirmed by the Prosecutor’s Office (that) of the four (Americans) there are two deceased, one person injured and another alive,” Villareal detailed in a live call during the daily morning conference of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Put on loudspeaker, the governor explained that an hour before he had been notified that there were indications of having seen the four US citizens.

The FBI reported on Sunday the disappearance of the four Americans, kidnapped last Friday after crossing the border in the border city of Matamoros, in Tamaulipas, one of the Mexican states hardest hit by violence.

Investigators believe the Americans were mistakenly targeted by a Mexican cartel that likely mistook them for Haitian drug traffickers, a US official with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.
