The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) warned of a possible increase in rainfall in the coastal region of Ecuador during March, after a February that experienced an increase in the amount and intensity of rain, with several periods of moderate to very strong intensity.
After the analysis of the days elapsed in March, Inamhi reported that “much of the coastal region could witness a new period of intense rains, accompanied by electrical storms and gusts of wind starting this weekend” and that will be extended mainly during the first fortnight of the month.
This foreseen scenario responds, mainly, to the warm conditions of the Pacific Ocean off the coast and its interaction with the atmosphere, which will favor the intensification of rainfall in the coastal region.
According to this projection, the forecast rains may cause soil saturation in sloping areas and cause increases in river levels in the region.
These conditions can trigger possible landslides and overflow of bodies of water, he warned.
Already in February, flooding was recorded in coastal areas, as well as landslides on roads.
