Von der Leyen meets Biden at the White House next week

The president of the European ComissionUrsula von der Leyen, travels next week to USA and Canada to meet with the US President, Joe Bidenand the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeauand discuss transatlantic relations, trade, strategic industry partnerships and cooperation in support of Ukraine.

As reported today by the European Commission in a statement, Von der Leyen will arrive in Washington on Wednesday afternoon and will meet with Biden at the White House on Friday, March 10.

EU-US cooperation on global and geostrategic priorities will be at the center of their discussions, Brussels said.

The two leaders will also discuss “ways to maintain transatlantic leadership in cleantech and ensure EU-US collaboration on innovation and secure supply chains for cleantech” with the global goal of achieving “net zero emissions”.

Recently, the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, stated that in her opinion “soon” “progress” will be seen in talks with the European Union over the massive subsidy plan for US-produced green technologies, which is causing concern in the EU.

Von der Leyen will arrive in the US capital from Canada, where he plans to land next Monday afternoon in Ottawa, and the next day he will travel to the Canadian Forces Base in Kingston, from where many Canadian troops left for Poland to support humanitarian efforts for Ukrainian refugees and where he will meet with Trudeau, the Commission reported.

From there, the two presidents will appear before the press and will later speak with personnel from the Canadian Armed Forces and will visit a Canadian clean technology company.

“This visit highlights the potential of the EU-Canada Critical Raw Materials Partnership, which both parties intend to take forward”highlights Brussels in its statement.

That same Tuesday, the German politician will return to Ottawa to deliver a speech in a joint session of the Canadian Parliament and then, in the evening, will attend a reception with the business community, including European companies present in Canada, organized by Trudeau.

Already on Wednesday morning, Von der Leyen will hold a meeting with the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, after which the president of the Community Executive will leave for Washington, where her agenda, beyond her interview with Biden, will be communicated more forward.

This will be the second trip that Von der Leyen has made to Washington since Democrat Biden arrived at the White House, where they met on November 11, 2021 as a symbol of reconciliation between the United States and the European Union, after the tense bilateral relationship. during the strained years of Republican Donald Trump.
