The president of the CNE, César Abreo, indicated that “the act of Colombian democracy that we are putting on stage again today has a very long tradition” celebrated despite the fact that the electoral authorities have overcome “many difficulties.” “However, we have all learned from each other,” he added.

“We have a people that has just pronounced its verdict, and today before the citizen population we endorse the popular will,” he explained, and assured to deliver the credentials “with the certainty of being before the two main responsible for the destiny of our country in a new stage born from the changes started many generations ago”.

Dancing for a few seconds to the rhythm of the sounds of the Pacific, Francia Márquez first received her credential as vice president of Colombia from Judge Doris Ruth Méndez Cubillos, the only woman on the CNE, who considered it an “immense honor” to deliver the document “to the first woman Afro-descendant to hold office.

Then it was Petro’s turn, to whom the magistrate Luis Guillermo Pérez handed it over to shouts from the public of “yes, it could be done.” Pérez mentioned the university student Lucas Villa, murdered in the city of Pereira during the 2021 protests, and quoted his words: “I hope the spirit is with us so that we can survive to create a new world.”

“Francia Márquez you are a survivor, Petro is a survivor, the human rights defenders community are survivors” and “these are tremendously alive this afternoon in the delivery of this credential (…) the thousands of men and women who were sacrificed because they wanted a better country and they fought for freedoms, democracy, peace and to defend mother earth”, Pérez added.

“We deserve to live tasty, to live with dignity, with rights, with social justice and we deserve to live taking care of the big house,” said Márquez after receiving the credential as vice president, at a “moment that for black people is an act of racial justice and that for women it is a moment of gender justice.”

“Let us honor the memory of all the young people and leaders who are no longer here but who fell for this moment,” he asked, adding that he only wants to “contribute by working hard so that never again will a person in this country say that it is not possible, that is not capable”.

Petro, for his part, insisted on the idea of a “great national agreement”, for which he reported that he had “symbolically” invited his rival at the polls, Rodolfo Hernández, and former president Álvaro Uribe, of whom he has been the main opponent, to talk “about country issues.”

“What we really want is for millions of Colombians to enter into dialogue mode, but for it to be binding, not only to talk, but to make decisions (…) to reach agreements”, to “build the paths of transformation , not to continue as we are, “he said.

“The era of change begins in Colombia,” concluded the president-elect of Colombia, who will take office on August 7 to replace the current president, Iván Duque. (YO)
