Mexico promotes plan against inflation with its Latin American allies

Mexico promotes a plan to face inflation in Latin Americarevealed this Thursday the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwho plans to meet with several of his colleagues to define strategies.

López Obrador said that on Wednesday he held telephone talks with his Brazilian counterparts, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and Argentina, Alberto Fernández. Other leaders would join the project.

“We are going to carry out an anti-inflation plan of mutual aid for growth, for commercial economic exchange with Latin American countries”, and “to face the high cost of living together”, the president pointed out in his usual press conference.

“It seems to me that it is a great idea (…), it is something necessary for everyone”, Fernández commented, according to fragments of the conversations later released by the Mexican government.

The leaders – all from the left – will initially hold a teleconference on April 5 and then will meet in person in Mexico, López Obrador said.

Argentina closed 2022 with inflation of 94.8% -one of the highest in the world-, while Colombia’s stood at 13.1% and Mexico’s at 7.8%, according to official figures.

López Obrador maintained that one of the measures could be the elimination of some tariffs, and stressed that the countries interested in the proposal have economies that are complementary to each other.

“Brazil has poultry, Argentina meat, Colombia and Cuba cement, and we also have many things to offer. There are many opportunities for economic and commercial exchange”, He presented in the talks.

“We are starting”clarified López Obrador, who indicated that his Argentine counterpart promised to speak with the presidents of Chile and Bolivia, Gabriel Boric and Luis Arce, respectively, while he will talk this Thursday with the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro.
