The introduction of a ban on the registration of new combustion cars after 2035 may not be a foregone conclusion. The German government is looking for a coalition which will lose the idea already approved by the European Parliament, “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” reports. This is a revolt, because the passing of the regulations seemed to be only a formality until now.
Germany may block the ban on the sale of internal combustion cars. They want guarantees
The reports are confirmed by the official position of German Transport Minister Volker Wissing, who will announce on Tuesday that his country will not support the planned ban. The German authorities are demanding that the EU introduce the possibility of selling cars powered by synthetic fuels – produced with the help of renewable energy. However, the EU has not provided guarantees for this type of e-fuels.
The German Minister of Transport has already discussed the matter with Frans Timmermans, the head of the EU for climate,
At the beginning of next week, the Council of the European Union, which is made up of ministers of the member states, is to deal with the matter. It is possible that the solution, which gained a large majority in the EP and introduced debates between the EU authorities and individual states, will change the time frame. Germany wants combustion cars to be registered also after 2035.
France and Italy can support Germany. The ban on the sale of internal combustion cars is uncertain
The daily explains that the idea can be blocked if countries representing more than 35 percent of the country join the coalition. population plus one country. And due to the support of Italy and France (together with Germany, these countries are leaders in car production), blocking the idea is possible. It is equally possible, however, that Germany will eventually withdraw from the idea of blocking changes in the law – as long as they get guarantees regarding the possibility of using synthetic fuels.
Information that Germany is not very favorable to the ban on the sale of cars powered by traditional engines appeared as early as 2021. During the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, 24 countries, six major car manufacturers, almost 40 cities and 13 investors agreed on a date for ending car sales with combustion engines. Germany did not join the coalition at that time.
EP for ban
In mid-February, the European Parliament adopted the provisions of the “Fit for 55” package on transport emissions. By 2035, the European Union wants to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars and vans by 100%. This means that in 12 years we will no longer leave the showroom with a combustion car.
– This regulation encourages the production of zero-emission and low-emission cars. It sets out more ambitious targets for 2030 and a zero-carbon target for 2035, which is essential to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, said Jan Huitema, the MEP responsible for the project.
The politician also expressed the belief that the prices of zero-emission cars and their operating costs will fall, and the secondary market will develop rapidly. – In this way, environmentally friendly motoring will become accessible to everyone – he assured.
