British counter-terrorism police detain three men after vehicle explosion in front of a women’s hospital

The explosion, whose circumstances are still unclear and which caused the death of one person, took place in the morning in front of a Liverpool hospital.

The British antiterrorist police announced on Sunday that they arrested three men in the framework of the investigation into the explosion of a vehicle in front of a women’s hospital in Liverpool (northern England), in which one person died.

Police claimed “that three men – aged 29, 26 and 21 – had been detained in Liverpool’s Kensington area and arrested under the terrorism law,” in a message on Twitter.

The explosion, the circumstances of which is still unclear, took place in the morning.

The antiterrorist police in the North West of England, in charge of the investigation, specified that “the passenger of the car – a man – was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been formally identified.” “The driver – also a man – was injured (…) and remains hospitalized in stable condition,” they said.

The local police had explained that they received an alert around 11:00 a.m. local time and that they intervened quickly.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that one person died and another was taken to hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries, which fortunately do not endanger his life,” the police had previously said in a statement.

The car involved was a taxi, which stopped at the hospital shortly before the explosion, police said, adding that investigations were continuing to establish what happened.

“We keep all options open about the cause of the explosion” and work closely with local police, the anti-terrorism police said. Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his support “for all those affected by the terrible incident in Liverpool.”

“I want to thank the emergency services for their speed of intervention and their professionalism, and the police for their ongoing investigative work,” he wrote on Twitter.

The area was cordoned off by security services and traffic was cut near where the explosion occurred. According to images published in local media, thick gray smoke was visible near the hospital. (I)
