EU: Tenth package of sanctions against Russia approved. 121 people, companies and institutions on the “blacklist”

The EU countries finally approved the tenth package of sanctions against Russia on Saturday, said the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell. Before noon, the so-called written procedure accepting Friday’s findings of EU ambassadors.

Now, within a few hours, the documents should be published in the EU’s Official Journal, and then the sanctions package will enter into force.

Poland was the last to agree to another package of sanctions

The last country that agreed to the tenth package on Friday was Poland, because our representatives wanted to tighten the provisions – for example, they tried to push through a complete embargo on imports of Russian rubber for tire production, but Italy and Germany resisted.

Eventually, Poland relented and there will be a contingent exempt from sanctions in the amount of over 500,000 tons. Instead, a mechanism was pushed through to monitor the abandonment of these imports and the search for substitutes elsewhere.

Poland was also assured that work on sanctions in the nuclear sector would begin, that work on restrictions on Russian diamonds would be completed in coordination with the G7, and that the EU would seriously address the issue of abducted Ukrainian children.

It was also possible to force the urgent sanctions on dozens of Kremlin propagandists spreading harmful disinformation, as requested by the Ukrainian president.

Tenth package of EU sanctions against Russia

The tenth package of sanctions includes, above all, restrictions on the export of dual-use products and technologies, i.e. civilian ones used by the Russian defense industry.

The European Commission has calculated that the bans are worth more than 11 billion euros, although this value is in pre-war prices. There are also 121 people, companies and institutions on the EU blacklist, including several people responsible for illegal adoptions. Poland says there are dozens of such people and at least 30 institutions and organizations.
