What is the START III treaty?

The New START or START III is an agreement signed in 2010 by the leaders of that stage, Barack Obama (USA) and Dimitri Medvedev (Russia), in order to avoid a nuclear war.

But in 2011 the agreement entered into force and was extended for 10 years.

The treaty limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads the United States and Russia can deploy, and allows each country to inspect each other 18 times. In this sense, both countries can only have 1,550 long-range nuclear warheads.

It also precludes the number of vehicles and delivery systems for nuclear weapons – deployed or in reserve – Washington and Moscow.
