The aeronautical manufacturer Airbus said Wednesday that it will hire more than 800 people this year in Canada to expand production of the A220 aircraft.
The manufacture of the A220, a medium-range jet developed in Canada, is concentrated in the Airbus plant in the Canadian town of Mirabel.
The president of Airbus Canada, BenoƮt Schultz, said in a statement that after hiring more than 800 people in 2022, including 400 for the production of the A220, they will expand their workforce again this year by more than 800 workers.
Most of the new jobs, 700, will be created at the Mirabel plant, a northern suburb of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
Two-thirds of the new hires will be in support roles, while the remaining third will work in production.
In addition to manufacturing the A220, Airbus has in Canada Airbus Helicopters Canada, which provides support to civilian and military customers, and Navblue, which produces navigation software.
Airbus employs a total of 4,000 people in Canada.
In 2020, the Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier sold its commercial aircraft division, whose main product was the C Series of aircraft, to Airbus.
Following the acquisition, Airbus renamed the aircraft the A220, a family of narrow-body twin-engine aircraft with the capacity to seat between 100 and 160 passengers.
