The devastating earthquakes on 6 February which claimed the lives of 40,689 in Turkey have left hundreds of thousands homeless in addition to thousands injured.
As reported by the Turkish authorities today, approximately one million people currently live in Turkey in tents, prefabricated houses or some temporary shelter institution.
To this figure must be added almost Half a million of people who have been evacuated of the areas affected by the earthquake. According to Yunus Seker, president of the Turkish national emergency service AFAD, they have evacuated 460,945 people from the affected regions and are accommodating 318,000 of them in public shelters and hotels.
According to the latest figures, released today by the Ministry of Urban Planning, 20,000 buildings, totaling 71,000 homes or offices, have been collapsed in the eleven affected provinces.
In total, of 830,000 buildings investigated so far in the region, 105,000 are either collapsed or so badly damaged that they must be demolished as soon as possible, says a ministry statement.
Three quarters of the total number of buildings inspected have not suffered any damage (407,000) or have only slight damage (205,000), so they can be returned to habitation immediately, as stressed by the Turkish Vice President, Fuat Oktay, who has insisted, however, that you should not enter any house whose solidity has not been previously certified by experts.
The Turkish authorities have promised to establish up to 100,000 prefabricated houses in the coming months.
Provisional balance of victims
Seker has specified that the number of deceased verified rises this Sunday to 40 689which represents an increase of 47 compared to the balance released on Saturday, a still provisional balance, since a significant increase is expectedgiven estimates that there are still tens of thousands of bodies under the rubble.
The search for survivors has already concluded in almost the entire region, except for the provinces of Kahramanmaras and Hatay, the most affected, where searches are still being carried out in some 40 buildings, according to Seker clarified.
