At least seven people have been arrested in relation to the discovery this past Friday of 18 dead migrants in a truck near the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia.
The Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office, reports the NOVA agency, is studying whether to charge the detainees with murder and manslaughter, after a whole night of investigations at the place where the truck was found.
The homes of the detainees have been searched and several more people are being sought, who could already be outside the country.
The truck was carrying 52 people, including children. The survivors have been transferred to hospitals in Sofia and some are in intensive care.
“They were discovered in a hopeless conditiondeprived of oxygen, wet, freezing cold and hungry,” the UN agencies lamented.
All applaud, however, “the quick actions of the relevant authorities, including the hospitals that have provided support and care to the survivors.
“UNICEF, IOM and UNHCR stand ready to assist the authorities and survivors and are confident that those responsible for this heinous crime will be swiftly brought to justice,” they add.
