The mayor of the Peruvian province of La Mar, in the southern region of Ayacucho, and his wife died after the car in which they were traveling through a rural area was attacked with firearms by unknown persons, local media reported.
Mayor Wilder Manyavilca and his wife, Dunia Bustíos, were hit by several shots in the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro rivers (Vraem), a rugged area of mountainous jungle where remnants of the Shining Path terrorist group move in alliance with drug cartels, according to authorities.
Local media pointed out that Mayavilca was heading this Friday, accompanied by his wife, an official and a driver, to lay the first stone of a community premises when he was ambushed by another truck at the height of the Herjemayo river, in the Las Palmas town center.

The passengers of that vehicle fired bursts of firearms that seriously injured Mayavilca, who died when he was transferred to the hospital in the town of San Francisco.
His wife also received several gunshot wounds and died while undergoing emergency surgery.
In this regard, the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, condemned this attack and described it as “repudiable”, after which he affirmed that it should be “investigated and punished immediately.”

“My deep condolences to his family and his people,” he expressed in reference to the mayor who, according to him, “assumed the commitment with the unanimous election of his people and today he has fallen for having faced this sad scourge with all the resources available ”.
Castillo reiterated that he has given “clear and precise” instructions so that “all the necessary personnel are deployed” and that a “thorough investigation is carried out immediately and quickly to restore tranquility to the family and neighbors.”
