At least six people have been murdered this Friday at different points in the town of Arkabutla, in Mississippi (United States), by shots from a man, who has finally been arrested by the police.
Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance has confirmed that the individual first killed a man in a store, around eleven in the morning (17:00 GMT); then she moved to a nearby house where he murdered his ex-wife and later he went to another house and killed two other people.
Police located the car of the shooting suspect and pursued him to the driveway of another home, where he was arrested. In said property, they found another fatality at the entrance and another inside a car. The man has been taken into custody without resistance.
Arkabutla is a small Mississippi town of just 300 inhabitants located south of the city of Memphis (Tennessee). The governor of the state of Mississippi, Tate Reeves, has confirmed the event in a message on his Twitter account, where he explains that the security forces believe that the suspect acted alone and that they do not know, at the moment, the reason that led him to kill these six people.
Reeves has stated that the county police have requested the help of the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation to clarify the facts.
73 mass shootings this year
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has said that it is “enough” and has condemned the shooting that took place in Mississippi: “We have 48 days a year and our nation has already experienced at least 73 mass shootings“, he pointed out.
The Democratic leader has described armed violence as “an epidemic” in the United States and affirms that “thoughts and prayers are not enough”, but that Congress must act immediately. “Jill and I mourn the six killed in today’s violence in Tate County, Mississippi, as we have mourned far too many Americans,” she added in a statement.
Similarly, President Biden has recalled the need to implement “common sense” reforms on firearms legislation in the United States. Among the measures, the president has mentioned requiring background checks on all arms sales; ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines; fully closing the ex-partner loophole to keep guns out of the reach of domestic abusers; require safe storage of guns and remove immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.
As Biden has stressed, all these reforms are “sensible” measures that “Congress could adopt right now and save lives.”
