Prices in Argentina rose 98.8% year-on-year in January

consumer prices in Argentina experienced a year-on-year rise of 98.8% last January, 4 percentage points more than last December, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) reported on Tuesday.

In the first month of the year, consumer prices grew 6% compared to last December, evidencing an acceleration with respect to the rate of 5.1% of the previous month.

Goods had a positive variation of 5.4% last month compared to December, while services rose 7.7%, data that amount to 100.9% and 93.3%, respectively, in the interannual comparison.

Among the increases registered in January, those of food and non-alcoholic beverages stand out, with an increase of 6.8% in relation to December and 98.4% in interannual terms.

Consumer prices accumulated a rise of 94.8% last year, with a notable acceleration compared to the 50.9% verified in 2021.

Last December, in the third review of the agreement signed with Argentina in 2022, the International Monetary Fund maintained the inflation projection in Argentina for 2023 at 60%.

Meanwhile, the most recent private forecasts collected monthly by the Central Bank indicate that inflation will be 97.6% this year and 79.6% in 2024.
