Marriages increase in the United States after a slump due to the pandemic

These are the largest annual increases since the end of World War II in 1945, detailed the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The number of weddings had fallen in 2020 to its lowest level since 1963 because many couples had to postpone the ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of marriages rose from 1,676,911 in 2020 to 1,985,072 in 2021, and the rate grew from 5.1 to 6 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants.

“Notwithstanding those increases, the number and rate in 2021 were both 2% lower than in 2019, another year in which marriage rates continued to decline in a trend that began in 2016,” added.

The marriage rate increased from 2020 to 2021 in 49 states and the District of Columbia, while North Dakota was the only state to see a decline.

The states with the largest increases in 2021 were New Mexico, with 74%, Hawaii (73), California (63), Rhode Island (29) and Kentucky (28), the CDC said.
