Who is Peter C.? The man who wanted to make a bloodbath in the election of Miss Belgium 2023

An act branded as terrorist marked the election of Miss Belgium 2023, whose gala took place on Saturday, February 11.

A man was arrested, together with a Dutch woman, when he was driving in a rented vehicle to the contest, which was taking place in a theater in the town of De Panne, police said from Brussels. The subject had firearms, the institution said.

While the arrest was taking place, the theater where the final night of the contest would take place was inspected, causing concern among the attendees, who were not informed exactly what was happening.

The personnel who were in the rooms received the order to evacuate the property.

Hours before the contest began, “the Police intercepted a message stating that a man was going to commit a massacre” and a large security operation was deployed in De Panne.

One of the presenters of the beauty event declared, hours later, through tears, that he was very afraid to go on stage.

The spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office, Eric Van Der Sypt, said on Saturday that the suspect “wanted to commit an attack, he wanted to do something that could end very badly,” reported El Mundo.

Peter C. wore a bulletproof vest

The armed man was identified as Peter C. and on Sunday, February 12, according to El Periódico, he was charged with attempted terrorist murder.

Peter C, 46, was detained “moments before entering the event in a rented car, carrying weapons and wearing a bulletproof vest,” reported Antena 3.

The Spanish press added that “apparently, the man had a license for five weapons, but they only found four.”

The reasons why he intended to enter the theater armed were not yet clear on the afternoon of Monday the 13th.

Inside and outside the theater

On the outskirts of the theater where the Miss Belgium gala would be, men in suits and elegant women were photographed while waiting to be authorized to enter.

They were told that the election would be delayed an hour for “security reasons.”

Inside the theater everything was inspected. Each room was checked

“We have even looked at the winner’s throne,” said, a little more relieved, the president of the Miss Belgium national committee, Darline Devos, quoted on Antena 3.

Peter C., by decision of a Bruges coroner, is behind bars, accused of “attempted terrorist murder”.

Animator recalled what happened in the Bataclan

“It was a very difficult afternoon. I was very, very afraid to go on stage. I was very, very afraid of finding myself as some have found themselves in the Bataclan. Even if everything was under control, the police were there,” said Gaëtan Bartosz, who co-hosted the Miss Belgium 2023 election, which saw the coronation of Emilie Vansteenkiste, published L’Avenir.

The entertainer explained to RTL that when they asked to evacuate the theater, he saw “between 50 and 100 policemen, I don’t know exactly, who entered the room. We did not quite understand what was happening (…)”.

Many looked at their phones to see if they knew.

On November 13, 2015, several terrorists entered the Bataclan theater in Paris and began shooting at those attending the Eagles of Death Metal concert.

The attack, which on the outskirts of the theater saw the detonation of explosives, left 137 fatalities and more than 400 wounded.
