UN requests nearly $400 million to help Syria earthquake victims

The United Nations Organization (UN) made a humanitarian appeal to collect almost 400 million dollars with the aim of helping those affected by the earthquake in Syria.

“Today I announce that the UN launches a humanitarian appeal for 397 million dollars for the populations affected by the earthquake that devastated Syria. This will last for three months,” said Antonio Guterres, Secretary General.

Syria was one of the countries affected, in addition to Turkeydue to the large-magnitude earthquakes that occurred on February 6 and has left at least 35,000 deaths.

The Secretary General’s request goes to all member states to “fund fully and without delay” this donation plan that can guarantee “the humanitarian aid that almost 5 million Syrians desperately need, including shelter, medical care and food”.

“The needs are immense,” stressed the Secretary General. “We all know that life-saving aid is not coming fast enough and at the scale it needs to be.”

It is estimated that 26 million people need help in Turkey and Syria.

Humanitarian aid began to arrive in Syria in recent days. Last Monday, President Bashar al Asad agreed to open two border crossings between Turkey and the rebel areas in the northwest of his country.

This Tuesday, a Saudi Arabian plane landed in Aleppo. “This is the first plane from Saudi Arabia to land in Syria for more than ten years,” he told the AFP a ministry official.

The plane carried 35 tons of food for the victims of the earthquake, reported the official Syrian news agency SANA.

In the same way, a convoy entered, made up of 11 trucks of humanitarian aid from the International Organization for Migration (IOM)said a spokesman for this United Nations organization in Geneva.

On Monday, however, trucks with aid kits crossed from Turkey into northwestern Syria. According to the Syrian Ministry of Transport, 62 aid planes have landed in Syria so far and more are expected in the coming days, mostly from Saudi Arabia.

The Embassy of Turkey in Ecuador thanked the donations that were delivered in Guayaquil and Quito, and specified that they will be sent to Turkey as soon as possible. “We have run out of storage space.”
