Ten days ago, in Bogotá, a Colombian judge decided to send John Poulos, the boyfriend and suspect in the femicide of DJ Valentina Trespalacios, behind bars. Little by little, details of his life in prison are becoming known, which is far from that of any other prisoner.
The neighboring country’s prison institute, Inpec, decided that Poulos should remain in the La Picota prisonwhile the trial for the murder that impacted inside and outside Colombia is awaited.
La Picota is located in Bogotá, the same city where on the afternoon of Sunday, January 22, 2023, a recycler found, in a garbage dump, the body of Trespalacios inside a suitcase.

John Poulos behind bars
A Colombian outlet, Cambio, learned firsthand how Poulos, a US citizen, father of three children he stopped seeing in January 2021, spends his days, according to his ex-wife.
John Poulos is being held at the Extraditables areafrom La Picota, and in a cell alone… for the simple reason that his life must be guaranteed.
“He is the only prisoner who has a cell just for him in jail,” publishes that medium and advances that in the Extraditables pavilion “there are 240 prisoners who spend their days in cells where three or four people sleep.”
The cell, they add, “has a private bathroom, a sink, a small closet and a bed.”
Poulos remains in a 3×3 meter cell, reports Vanguardia.
The conditions in which the person allegedly responsible for the death of Valentina Trespalacios remains draws attention and unleashes opinions of all kinds, but the answer is that “he must be isolated for his safety.”
The “privileges” are not only those: “Poulos does not share with other inmates at any time of the day.”
“He is the only one who goes out alone to eat his food and sunbathe.”
The aforementioned Colombian media exposes that “the argument is the same: to guarantee their rights.”
“He did not come to murder, he came to be with someone he loved”: the incredible phrases pointed out at the hearing of John Poulos, accused of murdering Valentina Trespalacios
“The detainee complained”
The Colombian Prosecutor’s Office points out that “the evidence allowed us to establish that the foreign citizen rented a vehicle for three days to be with the victim and, later, get rid of her. He arrived in that car on the afternoon of recent January 22 at the El Dorado airport, to return it and take a flight to Panama City.
John Poulos, from Panama, planned to travel to Istanbul, Turkey. At the Tocumen airport, in Panamanian territory, he was captured and sent to the neighboring nation.
He has been in prison for ten days and Poulos has already expressed his discontent.
John Poulos “abandoned his children two years ago”: How many children were born in his marriage in the United States and why did they file for divorce?
“Poulos complained to the prison authorities of the conditions of the establishment. However, they explained to him that these are the only conditions that can maintain him to guarantee his life.”
At the beginning of February, the prosecutor in the case charged him with the crimes of aggravated femicide and concealment, alteration or destruction of material evidence.
Poulos, the defendant, did not accept the charges, said the Prosecutor’s Office on the 2nd of this month.
