Austrian government proposes confinement for those not vaccinated against COVID-19

The head of the Government already warned yesterday that winter and the Christmas holidays will be “uncomfortable” for the unvaccinated.

The Austrian central government announced today that it wants confinement to be applied to those who are not vaccinated or healed from next week, a measure that it wants to negotiate over the weekend with the authorities of the nine regions of the country and debate in parliament. .

Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced at a press conference that his intention is to “give the green light” to this restriction this Sunday, given the “shameful” level of vaccination in Austria, which with only 65% is one of the most Lowlands of Western Europe.

The Upper Austria region, the one with the highest rate of infections with respect to the population, already announced yesterday a confinement of the unvaccinated, although details of how it will be applied have not yet been given.

“The situation is very tense. We want to find unique solutions for the whole country, for all the Länder,” said the conservative politician.

“The majority of the population that has been protected, that has been vaccinated, should not be the one that has to go to confinement now to protect the minority that has not been protected,” he said.

For this reason, Schallenberg once again appealed to the population to go to be vaccinated.

The head of the Government already warned yesterday that the winter and the Christmas holidays will be “uncomfortable” for the unvaccinated and that this confinement seems “probably inevitable”.

Since Monday, the prohibition that those who are not vaccinated or have not had the disease have access to leisure and gastronomy venues, beauty centers or events with more than 25 people, has been applied throughout the country.

The Government has established a transition period in which these services are accessible to those who have already received a dose and present a recent negative PCR test. (I)
