Catholic bishop is sentenced to 26 years in prison in Nicaragua

Nicaraguan Catholic Bishop Rolando Álvarezwho refused to go to the US with 222 other opponents released and expelled from their country, was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Octavio Rothschuh, president of the Criminal Chamber One of the Court of Appeals, read before official media the sentence that declares “the accused Rolando José Álvarez Lagos traitor to the Homeland” and guilty of crimes totaling 26 years in prison.

The court sentenced Álvarez to 15 years in prison for undermining national integrity, five years for spreading false news through information and communication technologies, five years and four months for aggravated obstruction of functions, and one year for contempt of authority.

“For finding ourselves in the presence of a real crime contest, the imprisonment sentences imposed will be served successivelyTherefore, the convicted Rolando José Álvarez Lagos must serve 26 years and four months in prison,” added Rothschuh.

In addition, the 56-year-old bishop he was deprived of his Nicaraguan nationality and his citizenship rights in perpetuity and they fined him $1,600, details afp.

“Establish as a provisional date of completion of the sentences on April 13, 2049″, said the magistrate.
