The FBI searched the home of former US Vice President Mike Pence on Friday as part of an investigation into the mishandling of classified documents, US media reported.
As with President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump, classified documents were found at Pence’s home in Carmel, Indiana (north) at the end of January.
Trump’s former number two (2017-2021), who is considering running for president in 2024, “was unaware of its existence” but ordered as a precaution that his home be searched, his lawyer, Greg Jacob, said at the time.
This new search was carried out on Friday, in coordination with the federal police (FBI) and Pence’s lawyers, according to the Washington Post.
In the United States, a 1978 law requires US presidents and vice presidents to send all their emails, letters, and other working documents to the National Archives. Another law, on espionage, prohibits the custody of documents classified as confidential in unauthorized and insecure places.
The former vice president’s spokesman and the FBI did not respond to requests for comment.
