In January 1999, the captain moored the barge. He had a problem with the turbine not working as it should, but it was too dark to check. He called in a specialist and they returned the next day. They were both convinced that the revs had fallen because of the garbage that had fallen into the turbine. It turned out that instead of garbage, human skin was screwed into the turbine.

The barge’s captain thought that garbage had got caught in the turbine. It was human skin

The police quickly determined who the remains belonged to. This is 23-year-old Katarzyna Z., who has been missing since November 1998. She studied in Krakow, but before she disappeared, she regularly missed classes. In college, she kept to the side and did not make friends with anyone. She had been suffering from depression since her father’s death.

On January 14, 1999, the police received a report about human remains on the grate that stopped the waste falling into the Vistula. It was part of a buttock and a leg with a piece of pants. After performing the appropriate tests, it turned out that the body parts belonged to Katarzyna Z. The police assumed that the murder was done by someone with special skills, because the cuts on the body are symmetrical and straight.

The investigation was given the codename “Skin”, and the crime was compared to the movie “The Silence of the Lambs”. The Polish policemen were joined by FBI officers, but they also did not find an answer to the question of who killed. Initially, the focus was on the search for the perpetrator among recent murder cases, where the perpetrators showed particular cruelty. Even Robert J.’s apartment was searched, but ultimately due to the lack of any clues, the investigation was discontinued.

The murderer lived 19 years on the loose. He was only recently sentenced

She reportedly met Robert J. Kasia near the Main Market Square. Initially, the prosecutor’s office presented evidence that could indicate that the man was behind the murder. As part of his compulsory military service, he worked in a dissecting room. It also appeared that “he had something strange in his eyes since he was a child.”

Only after his apartment was searched again in 2017 was he arrested by the police. Ultimately, it turned out that Robert J. was holding the victim, tortured her and administered drugs that prevented her from escaping. He suffered from necrophilic fetishism. Using an exercise bar, he broke her pelvis and femur, then dismembered her body. He regularly visited his victim’s grave, which was a clue for investigators. The proof of Robert J.’s guilt were the waxes found in his apartment and a diary in which he described the details of the crime. He was sentenced only in July 2022. He received a sentence of life imprisonment. To this day, Katarzyna’s whole body has not been found.
