American John Poulos, alleged femicide of DJ Valentina Trespalacios, will remain incarcerated in La Picota prison

The 59th municipal judge of Bogotá determined that the American John Poulos, accused as the author of the murder of the Colombian DJ Valentina Trespalacios, be transferred to a prison and remain there while the judicial process lasts.

For the magistrate there is a reasonable inference of authorship of aggravated femicide with the 21-year-old girl.

The Prosecutor’s Office also seeks to be charged with the charges of concealment, alteration and destruction of evidence.

In the assurance hearing, the judge pointed out that the measure is imposed so that the detainee does not leave the country and that his confinement in a men’s prison will reduce “to a greater extent the possibility of reiteration of femicides indirectly, it prevents other acts of concealment, alteration or destruction of material evidence”.

Poulos is accused of the femicide of Trespalacios that occurred on January 22. He would have murdered her in the apartment that they both recently shared and then dumped her body inside a dumpster.

After this, the American traveled to Panama and then went to Turkey, however, he could be detained at the Tocumen airport and expelled to Colombia.

This Friday it was learned that the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) decided to transfer Poulos to La Picota prison. His defense attorney had opposed his being transferred to an ordinary prison since his safety had to be guaranteed, although he added that he had no legal resources to prevent this.

“My client has repeatedly expressed his fear for his safety, life and integrity,” added lawyer Juan Manuel Falla.

The foreigner also asked at the hearing how his safety could be guaranteed.

La Picota is a medium and maximum security prison, it is one of the 132 penitentiary centers that Colombia has nationwide, according to RCN Radio. Its official name is Bogotá Metropolitan Prison and Penitentiary Complex and it is located southeast of Bogotá.

It has a capacity for 4,000 inmates and gang leaders, drug traffickers, paramilitaries, as well as those convicted of sexual crimes, among others, have been transferred there. (YO)
