If the growing trend of the pandemic continues.
The regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, Hans Kluge, warned this Wednesday that the continent could add half a million deaths from covid until the beginning of February 2022, if the growing trend of the pandemic it keeps.
Kluge stressed that 43 countries in the WHO European region, which includes 53 states in Europe and Central Asia, including Russia and several former Soviet republics, “will face high or extreme stress” on hospital capacity during this period.
“According to a very reliable projection, if we continue with this trajectory we could have another half a million deaths due to covid-19 in Europe and Central Asia before February 1 of next year,” he said during the presentation of the Health Plan 2021-2025 of the Spanish region of Catalonia
The manager reiterated that, currently, the European region is once again at the “epicenter” of the pandemic, since the number of accumulated cases “is rapidly approaching 80 million in the 53 countries”, and the number of deaths is almost 1 , 5 million.
Kluge himself already warned on Tuesday that the European region faces a “hard winter” due to the rebound in the pandemic, and indicated that last week some two million new infections of covid-19 were registered.
“Our region is the epicenter of the pandemic, with a growth in transmission, hospitalizations and deaths,” he emphasized.
In this regard, he called for intensifying vaccination of the general population, but especially among health personnel, to “keep the virus at bay.”
In up to seven countries in the region, he remarked, there are less than 20% of health workers with the complete vaccine. (I)
