COP26: First Draft Agreement Urges Rich Countries to Raise Climate Aid

The document must be debated until Friday by the national representatives.

The first draft of the agreement released by the British presidency of the COP26 climate summit urges rich countries to increase their aid for the adaptation of developing countries.

The text “reaffirms the long-term global objective of keeping the average temperature increase below 2ºC above pre-industrial levels and to make an effort to limit it to 1.5ºC”, although it recognizes that in this second case the impact of climate change would be ” Much lower”.

At the same time, COP26 “regrets to note that the goal of developed countries to mobilize $ 100 billion annually from 2020 has not yet been met” and emphasizes the need for “significantly higher support” to go beyond that amount for climate finance.

In the document prepared by the president of COP26, Alok Sharma, which must be debated until Friday by national representatives, special emphasis is placed on the growing adaptation needs for countries that are already suffering the most from the effects of global warming.

The draft “recognizes that adaptation needs will continue to increase with the severity of the impact of rising temperatures”, and therefore “emphasizes the urgency of increased action and support to increase adaptive capacity, strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerability. “from developing countries.

Along these lines, it shows its “concern” that the current provision of funds for adaptation is “insufficient”, and urges rich countries to increase “urgently” the funds allocated to it.

Regarding measures to mitigate climate change, the presidency only “invites” countries to consider new opportunities to reduce emissions, although it “urges them to accelerate the end of coal and fossil fuel subsidies.” (I)
