Mexican banks will accept the passport and consular registration for any procedure, including opening an account, a measure that could benefit the more than 30 million Mexicans living in the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported on Monday. ).
“It was a pending task to obviously promote bank access, the sending of remittances, productive investment, integration”, expressed this Monday the owner for North America of the SRE, Roberto Velascoin the signing of an agreement between the Foreign Ministry and the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
The representative of the Mexican Foreign Ministry said that this agreement is part of the work plan of the SRE of the Mexican Government for all nationals abroad, especially in USA and in Canada.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard stressed that “It also ended up benefiting all of us because now the passport can also be used”.
The passport and the consular registration are two documents that guarantee the identity of a Mexican abroad.
The registration even identifies the address where these people reside, similar to the voting card issued by the National Electoral Institute (INE).
Foreign Minister Ebrard explained that from the signing of this agreement there will be a month of tests to verify all the computer systems that affect this process and then formally start this new provision in the banking institutions in Mexico.
“We are going to have it throughout the month of February testing so that this works perfectly well, that is the objectiveEbrard said.
In addition, he said that these passports cannot be forged and that since they were updated, in October 2021, no case of theft or identity theft has been filed, reasons for which they were not previously allowed for any banking procedure.
The General Director of Passport Offices of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, Carlos Candelariamaintained that with this agreement a verification system was consolidated that “will give banks a certainty”.
He added that the most important thing is that personal data cannot be exchanged, as it is a binary system.
“That is, you only consult the bank (the user’s information), we tell you if the information of the person who is presenting your document is correct”, he delved.
“And parallel databases cannot be created either, that is, the information will not be available to the banks or the Bank of Mexico, and with that, we protect personal data.”, he added.
Mexico It has representation in 80 countries where these official identity documents are issued and processed, while data from the Mexican Foreign Ministry indicates that there are Mexicans in 125 different nations around the world.
