The President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has announced two reform projects Constitution to carry out general elections this year, in the event that Congress does not approve the advancement of the elections, which will be put to a vote this Monday.

One of Boluarte’s proposals is to hold the elections on second Sunday in Octoberon the 15th, while the second round would be in December.

The second bill is a reform of the Constitution of 1993 by the next elected Parliament, after its approval in Congress it must be submitted to a referendum so that the public can decide if the reform is approved.

“The Executive’s proposal with this legislative initiative seeks broad citizen participation, especially those sectors most excluded from society,” he expressed in a televised message to the nation, after arguing that “this bill fits perfectly in the expectation that a sector of Congress has”.

Likewise, the Peruvian president has criticized Parliament for not having managed to approve the electoral advance, despite the fact that the massive demonstrations that are taking place demand it.

Meanwhile, the Ombudsman of Peru has recalled the responsibility that the country’s Government and Congress have to “pacify and change” the situation. “The death of people in protests is not a ‘social cost’, nor ‘collateral damage,'” he criticized.

Peru is immersed in a deep political crisis born after the dismissal by Congress of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced on December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.

After the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people have come out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent call for presidential elections. According to the latest data, some 60 people have died in these protests.
