Norwegian police reported on Tuesday killing a man armed with a knife in Oslo after trying to stab several people before attacking a patrol that came to arrest him.

An officer was injured while trying to arrest him on a street in the Bislett neighborhood of the Norwegian capital, police confirmed, who do not believe it was an attack.

“We do not rule out any motivation, but at this time there is no information pointing to a terrorist attack,” Inspector Egil Jørgen Brekke told a news conference.

Police did not want to give details about the man’s identity.

According to the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang, he is a Russian citizen in his 30s who had been sentenced in December 2020 to psychiatric treatment after a knife attack a year earlier, also in Oslo.

Videos of witnesses released on social media and picked up by Norwegian media show the suspect shirtless and armed with a large knife. He is hit at least twice by a police car.

After being thrown against a wall, the man then runs towards the police vehicle, manages to open the door and rushes inside.

“The police tried to run him over while he was trying to stab someone. He then began to actively attack the police with a knife (…) and shots were fired, ”said the head of the operation, Tore Solberg, in an impromptu press conference broadcast on public television NRK.

Transferred to hospital, the attacker succumbed to his injuries. (I)
