Lasso and Petro will meet in Tulcán to consolidate the Ecuador-Colombia relationship

The presidents of Ecuadorthe conservative William Lassoand of Colombiathe leftist Gustavo Petrowill meet next Tuesday in the Ecuadorian border city of Tulcán with the aim of consolidating the bilateral relationship, especially on the common border.

This was announced this Friday by the General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency in Quito through a statement that listed the issues that both rulers will address in the eleventh Ecuador-Colombia Binational Cabinet.

Accompanied by their ministerial teams, the two leaders will review the main issues of the bilateral relationship and adopt new commitments within the framework of the so-called 2023 Action Plan between the two countries.

The Secretariat of Communication specified that among the thematic axes that will be addressed during the Binational Cabinet include security and defense, infrastructure and connectivity, border issues, environmental issues, social and cultural issues, and economic and commercial issues.

In addition, it will analyze “Binational Plan for the Border Integration Zone”which encompasses a set of actions to promote development between the populations of both countries that settle near the divide.

Prior to the presidential meeting, the vice ministers of Foreign Relations, the Ecuadorian Luis Vayas and the Colombian Francisco Coy, will hold a working meeting to refine the preparations for the presidential meeting and the ministerial teams of both countries.

It is expected that the meeting in the border city of Tulcán will conclude with the signing of a presidential declaration and the adoption of the “Action Plan 2023″.

The Government of Ecuador trusts that the appointment will allow “Strengthen bilateral relations in the most varied areas, promote the well-being of the citizens of both countries and the development of the border integration zone.”

It will be the first meeting of this type between Lasso and Petro, since the tenth Binational Cabinet was held in the Colombian Cartagena de Indias on December 17, 2021, when the conservative Iván Duque was still serving as president of Colombia.
