One of the princess’s favorite dresses Diana of Waleswith which she appeared pictured in Vanity Fair magazine in 1997 shortly before her death, sold this Friday for just over $600,000 at an auction held in NY by Sotheby’s house.
The garment triggered intense bidding and ended up exceeding all expectations, as it had an estimated price of between $80,000 and $120,000.
In the end, the winner paid a hammer price of $480,000, which with fees and taxes brings the final amount to $604,800.

The dress is an aubergine velvet silk evening gown in the “infanta” and with a voluminous skirt in the shape of a tulip, designed by Victor Edelstein, who was Lady Diana’s couturier for almost a decade.
Ahead of the auction, global director of art and memorabilia Sotheby’sChristina Prescott-Walker, highlighted to EFE that the dress was selected for Diana’s wardrobe because “personifies” his elegance and remained “immortalized forever” in a royal portrait alongside the now King Charles III painted in 1991 by Lord Snowdon.
It was also the dress that she wore in a photo session with the renowned Mario Testino for Vanity Fair in 1997 and, later, it was part of an auction of her personal collection of 80 dresses to benefit the fight against AIDS, one of the causes what he was most passionate about.
The dress was sold as part of a sweeping auction called “The One,” which included items representative of human history, from antiques to a jersey of NBA basketball player LeBron James that raised $3.68 million and a 1962 President John F. Kennedy birthday ticket for which $94,500 was paid.
