Ukraine has reported the release of 264 of its soldiers from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol. 53 seriously wounded servicemen have been taken to a medical center in Novoazovsk, while another 211 “defenders” have been transferred to Olenivka, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. As regards “the defenders” who still remain in the Azovstal area, Ukraine has indicated that the operation to remove them from there continues.
The Ukrainian Army has explained that the evacuated soldiers they do not belong to the Azov battalionbut are from “the 12th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, the 36th Marine Brigade, as well as border guards, police officers, volunteers and Territorial Defense forces of the city of Mariupol”.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced yesterday a ceasefire in the vicinity of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupolto carry out the evacuation of the wounded Ukrainian military.
The humanitarian corridor has been achieved after the Russian authorities have managed to reach a agreement “with representatives of the Ukrainian troops,” according to the Ministry of Defense in a statement. The Ukrainian government has explained, for its part, that the evacuees will be brought home through a new prisoner exchange with Russian authorities.
In his evening message, Zelensky he stressed that “Ukraine needs living Ukrainian heroes”.
