Macron and Lula talk about the environment, hunger and “risks” of democracy

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva He spoke this Thursday with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macronupon “challenges” with the environment and hunger and “risks” of the extreme right for democracy, reported the government of Brazil.

“Both agreed on the risks that hang over democracy due to the violent actions of extreme right-wing groups” and the importance of “fighting disinformation”, indicated a note from the Brazilian presidency.

Macron ratified the support of France after the invasion on January 8 of thousands of followers of the far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to official headquarters in Brasilia, seeking the fall of Lula.

“During our call, I reiterated to Lula France’s support after the attacks on Brazilian democracy,” the French president said in a tweet.

In addition, in the telephone conversation of more than an hour, the two leaders discussed the ongoing negotiations to seal the Mercosur-European Union agreement and the “urgency” of seeking peace between Russia and Ukraine, countries in conflict since February 2022.

Lula, 77 years old and in power for the third time since January 1, invited Macron to visit Brazil and visit the shipyard in Rio de Janeiro where a nuclear-powered submarine is being built as a result of cooperation between the two countries.

The presidents also discussed efforts to combat climate change, an agenda considered a priority by both governments.

“We reaffirm our determination to act in favor of the climate, biodiversity, our forests and against hunger. We are going to overcome these challenges,” said the 45-year-old French president.

Lula’s return to power of the Latin American giant, which he had already governed between 2003 and 2010, was a balm for relations between Brazil and France.

Macron and Bolsonaro (2019-22) had very bad relations, especially due to the far-right’s handling of the protection of the Amazon, a key resource in the international race to stop climate change.
