Former US marine in prison in Russia begins hunger strike

After suffering “repeated” violations of their rights.

A former US marine, who is serving a nine-year sentence in a Russian prison, began a hunger strike in protest against alleged violations of his rights, he told the AFP his lawyer.

Trevor Reed, a US citizen, is incarcerated in a penal colony in the Russian republic of Mordovia, some 500 km southeast of Moscow, after being sentenced for drunkenly assaulting police officers in the capital in 2019.

Reed’s lawyer, Sergei Nikitenkov, indicated that he began his hunger strike on November 4 after suffering “repeated” violations of his rights.

Nikitenkov claimed that prison staff put his client in solitary confinement several times for alleged violations of prison rules, which Reed denies.

Prison staff also withhold letters sent to the US citizen and do not allow him to “write in his own language,” according to Nikitenkov. (I)
