Former US President Donald Trump, with a free hand to return to Facebook and Instagram

Goalthe American technology and social media conglomerate, “will end the suspension” of Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, two years after the former US president was banned after the assault on the Capitol.

The conglomerate suspended Trump from its platforms on January 7, 2021, a day after hundreds of people stormed the Capitol on his behalf, saying his posts risked inciting more violence. The former president’s accounts on other major social media services, including YouTube and Twitter, were also removed that week.

The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying, the good, the bad and the ugly, so they can make informed decisions at the polls.”, declared this Wednesday Nick Clegg, head of international affairs at Meta. “But that doesn’t mean there aren’t limits to what people can say on our platform. When there is a clear risk of harm in the real world, a deliberately high bar for Meta to intervene in public discourse, we act,” he added.

The New York Times indicates that Meta has been at the center of a debate about free speech online and who should have the power to decide what can be published and what must be removed.

In any case, it is not clear if Trump, the user who had the most followed Facebook account when he was banned, will be active again on that social network or on Instagram. Last November, his Twitter account was also reinstated, though he hasn’t posted anything so far.

The former US president has his own social network, Truth Social, in which he has a financial stake and where he is obliged to make your posts are exclusively available for six hours before you can share them on other sitesaccording to a filing with the Securities and Exchange.

Truth Social is currently the only social network he is active on.

For its part, YouTube has not said whether it will allow the former president to return to the video platform. (YO)
