Seven people were arrested in an international operation against hackers behind attacks with hijacking programs (‘ransomware’) that brought them at least half a million dollars, Europol reported Monday.

The detainees are affiliated with the Russian-language hacking group REvil, sometimes called Sodinokibi, and the ransomware group GandCrab, the EU law enforcement agency said in a statement.

Two people were arrested in Romania last Thursday and another in Kuwait. In recent months, three individuals were also detained in South Korea and another in an unspecified European country during an operation called “GoldDust”.

Seventeen countries participated in the operation, as well as Europol, Eurojust – the European agency for judicial cooperation – and Interpol, according to Europol.

“Suspects of some 7,000 infections, the detained affiliates demanded more than 200 million euros [231 millones de dólares] as a ransom, “said Europol.
