With his rivals imprisoned or exiled, Daniel Ortega obtained 75% of the votes and shielded a fifth term in Nicaragua.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Monday condemned the “undemocratic” elections this Sunday in Nicaragua and reiterated that Washington will continue to impose “sanctions” on the Government of President Daniel Ortega.
In a statement, the head of US diplomacy criticized that the “repression and electoral manipulation” by the Nicaraguan Executive took away any “real meaning” from the vote of November 7.
“The United States joins other democracies in the region and around the world in condemning this subversion of democratic norms,” Blinken noted.
For this reason, he added that the US will continue “to use diplomacy, coordinated measures with regional partners, sanctions and visa restrictions” to promote the “accountability” of the “accomplices” of the Ortega government.
Most of the international community does not recognize the results of the presidential elections held this Sunday in Nicaragua, in which Ortega, with his rivals imprisoned or exiled, won 75% of the vote and sealed a fifth term.
With seven presidential candidates from the opposition in prison, accused of “treason,” Ortega, in power since 2007, achieved his goal of being reelected for a new five-year term, along with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo. .
This Sunday, the American president, Joe Biden, already described the elections in Nicaragua as “pantomime neither free, nor fair, and certainly not democratic.”
In the next few hours, Biden is expected to sign the so-called “Renacer” law (Enforcing Compliance with Conditions for Electoral Reform in Nicaragua) that expands supervision of loans from international financial institutions to Nicaragua.
In addition, it advocates the imposition of selective sanctions on Nicaraguan officials and that these be coordinated with the Government of Canada and the European Union (EU), while reviewing the continued participation of Nicaragua in the Free Trade Agreement with Central America ( CAFTA). (I)
