Russia warns of ‘global catastrophe’ if West sends more weapons to Ukraine

Support Ukraine with the send of heavy weapons it has been key in recent discussions between Western nations and NATO, something the country urgently needs to deal with Russian forces on its soil.

Faced with the promise of help from the West, the president of the Chamber of Deputies in Russia, Vyacheslav Volodin warned that “offensive weapons supplies to the kyiv regime will lead to a global catastrophe”.

In his statement, Volodin stressed that if the United States and NATO countries send weapons to Ukraine to try to capture Russian territories, Russia would apply “response measures with the use of more powerful weapons”.

The official called on the West to “become aware of its responsibility before humanity”, because “with their decisions, Washington and Brussels lead the world to a terrible war” and provoke a “world-wide tragedy that will destroy your countries.”

“Arguments that nuclear powers have never used weapons of mass destruction in local conflicts do not hold up,” Volodin said.

At the Davos Forum, held last Wednesday in Switzerland, the United Kingdom agreed to send 14 Challenger 2 heavy tanks, and Poland said it was willing to send 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks, if Berlin authorizes their re-export to Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Monday that your country will ask Berlin for permission to deliver Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

“Even if we don’t get their agreement, we will give our tanks to Ukraine, together with other countries, within the framework of a small coalition, even if Germany is not part of it,” Morawiecki said.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in an interview on Sunday that her country was ready, despite the reluctance of the head of government, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, to take a stand.
