Germany does not give in to pressure and postpones the decision on the shipment of Leopard tanks to Ukraine

The German government has not unblocked the supply of Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv at the meeting of the countries of the Contact Group for Ukraine that took place at the Ramstein military base in Germany. As the manufacturer of these long-awaited tanks, Germany must authorize their delivery.

Boris Pistorius, the country’s defense minister, has indicated that the Government must verify the quantity and availability of these vehicles. “We are preparing just in case,” she said, facing a final decision that he hopes will be known “as soon as possible.”

Germany does not give in to Ukraine’s demands despite Zelenski’s assurances that “tanks will achieve victory“. Nor does it give in to pressure from partners like Poland or Brussels.

“I think Ukraine needs the heavy tanks it has requested,” he said. Josep BorrellHigh Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

From Berlin they maintain that there must be an agreement between all the allies, a consensus to which the Spanish defense minister also refers. “We will continue sending material and the material that is sent will always be in accordance with what Ukraine requests from us in coordination with our allies”, underlines Margarita Robles.

Without having yet made a decision on the delivery of the Leopards, Russia has already qualified this meeting in ramstein provocation by the West.

Leopard 2 tanks are the most coveted piece in Ukraine. In addition to using less fuel than the American Abrams, the Leopard 2 has numerous advantages. They advance at about 80 kilometers per hour and have significant fire potential. They can hit targets up to four kilometers away.

They can also be used at night because their optics allow identify a target up to three kilometers.

They are pure German technology. “The most balanced carmature, in which everything works perfectly, which has been tested in combat and which you will be able to have in quantity is the Leopard 2″, indicated Yago Rodríguez, director of The Political Room.

If only a few dozen tanks are sent, the impact will be symbolic. But a few hundred can be decisive. For example, if you had them, Ukraine would not have lost Soledar or it could recapture Mariupol.

Is there an alternative to the German ‘no’? Several countries that own these tanks are willing to give them to Ukraine, but, by contract, they need the permission of the manufacturer: Germany; which, for the moment, still does not give them.

Although Poland has talked about handing them over, even without the go-ahead from Berlin. “I think it’s a form of pressure, Germany, in the end, authorize other countries to deliver it to Ukraine“, highlighted Enrique Ayala, analyst and founder of Alternativas.

An armored that could be key in the future of the war.
