A total of 86 journalists were killed worldwide in 2022, compared to 55 in 2021Unesco said Monday, noting that more than half occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean.

After several years of consecutive declines, the sharp increase in the number of journalists killed in 2022 is alarming”, warned the director general of Unesco, Audrey Azoulay, in a statement.
The UN Organization for Education, Science and Culture recalls that, since 2018 (99 informers killed), the number had dropped to 58 on average between 2019 and 2021.
Of the 86 in 2022, 44 homicides occurred in the Latin American and Caribbean region, with Mexico (19) and Haiti (9) in the lead. Sixteen were produced in Asia and the Pacific and 11 in Eastern Europe.
In its statement, the Paris-based organization warns that “around half” of the journalists killed were not working at the time of the attack.
“This continues the trend of recent years.which implies that there are no safe spaces for journalists, not even in their free time,” the note underlines.
Unesco specifies that these were liquidated for reporting on organized crime, the rise of extremism, corruption or crimes against the environment, among other reasons.

The number of journalists killed in countries in conflict also increased in 2022 from 20 to 23 in one year. In Ukraine, where Russia launched an offensive in March, ten were killed last year.
86% of murders of media workers remain unpunished, recalled the organization, which points to other forms of “violence” such as kidnappings, forced disappearances or digital violence. (YO)
