A plane crash in Nepal causes at least 68 deaths

Sunday morning begins with a misfortune. Several people have died after the Yeti Airlines flight, which was going from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, to the tourist city of Pokhara, crashed on landing. Immediately afterwards, the ship was consumed in flames.

Various media have classified the accident as the worst air disaster in the country in three decades. The flight had 68 passengers and 4 crew members, according to Yeti Airlines.

The rescue operation has been difficult due to the circumstances. The plane crashed in a ravine and several bodies are buried. “31 (corpses) have been taken to hospitals,” he told AFP police official AK Chhetri, adding that another 36 bodies were found in the ravine.

Rescue efforts are still underway.

The flight, coming from Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital, crashed shortly before eleven in the morning, local time (05:15 GMT), near Pokhara, in the center of the country, where it was supposed to land.

This city is an important crossing point for foreign pilgrims and mountaineers.

Fourteen other foreigners were on board: five Indian citizens, four Russians, two Koreans, one Australian, one Irishman and one Frenchman, airline spokesman Sudarshan Bardaula said.

The fact has echoed on social networks. Several videos have gone viral, but the news agency AFP could not immediately authenticate the veracity of these images.

In a video shared on social networks, dozens of people could be seen around a huge fire, which gave off thick black smoke at the bottom of a ravine. Some tried to put out the flames by throwing water. (YO)
