Italy receives humanitarian ship with 800 rescued migrants

The German NGO humanitarian ship rescued 800 migrants.

Italy on Saturday allowed a humanitarian ship carrying some 800 migrants rescued at sea, including hundreds of minors and five pregnant women, to dock in Trapani, Sicily, German NGO Sea Eye reported.

The humanitarian ship of the German NGO rescued 800 migrants, who were traveling in two boats, in the Mediterranean between Wednesday and Thursday.

In the group there are more than 200 minors, among them “several under 10 years old”, and five pregnant women, the NGO said in a statement.

Some 200 people had to receive medical attention on board. “Our team is working to the limit of what is humanly possible,” Sea Eye President Gordon Isler said prior to the announcement of the landing permit.

The Ocean Viking, a vessel managed by the NGO SOS Méditerranée, is also looking for a port to disembark 314 migrants rescued at sea.

Italy is one of the main entry points to Europe for immigrants from North Africa, mainly from Tunisia and Libya, from where departures have increased considerably compared to previous years.

Almost 55,000 immigrants have landed in Italy since the beginning of the year, up from just under 30,000 in 2020, according to data from the Interior Ministry. (I)
